If you’re a private renter in England, BIG changes are coming this May.
The Renters Rights Act is introducing new rules around how tenancies work, so if you rent, listen up!
One of the biggest changes is there will be no more fixed-term tenancies, they will all become rolling monthly or weekly Assured Periodic tenancies.
This means if you want to move, you now only need to give two months’ notice, you don’t have to keep paying rent for the rest of your fixed term.
If you started on a fixed term tenancy, on the first of May it will change to a rolling one.
The second big change is that landlords can’t issue Section 21 no fault evictions. If they want you to move out, they have to give a valid reason.
Your landlord also can’t raise your rent more than once a year, and they have to give you two month’s notice of any increase in case you want to move out.
There are lots of other changes including protections to avoid discrimination and your rights to own a pet as a renter, find out more about these at moneyhelper.org.uk/renters-rights-act
